In a world of constant noise and distraction, finding mental clarity can feel like an uphill battle. But what if there were techniques to help you navigate life’s challenges with ease? Enter Positive Intelligence, a philosophy that offers a fresh perspective on how to live life more mindfully. It’s time to dive into one of its most relatable strategies: Surfing through life.
Surfers don’t fight the ocean; they ride the waves. This simple idea teaches us how to handle life’s challenges. Every day we’re bombarded with drama, distractions, and the pressure to be extraordinary. It’s overwhelming. The concept of “surfing through life” suggests a different approach: lean into your challenges and go with the flow rather than getting bogged down or overwhelmed.
Here are three strategies to use the next time you face a challenging situation:
- Just Breathe: Taking intentional breaths can calm your limbic system, allowing you to think clearly. The 5, 4, 6 breathing technique is a simple yet effective way to achieve this. Inhale for 5 seconds, hold for 4, and exhale for 6 seconds. The idea is to focus on your breath, so you can engage with the challenge from a calmer state.
- Gain Perspective: When faced with challenges, zoom out and consider the bigger picture. Ask yourself what’s really important in the grand scheme of things. Thinking about your life a year or even 10 years down the line can shift your focus and help you prioritize your actions.
- The Pareto Principle (80/20 Rule): It turns out, about 80% of the outcomes you care about come from just 20% of your efforts. So focus on what truly matters. By doing so, you can free yourself from the constant urge to do more and simply focus on what’s most effective.
