We used to think it was simple.
Just plug the right people in the right positions with the right workplans and we were all set.
But your role as a leader has undergone a significant shift.
No longer is it enough for you to be solely an expert in strategy and business acumen. In 2023, more than ever, you need to become a human expert.
What does it mean to be a human expert? It means having a deep understanding of why people do what they do and using that knowledge to influence behavioral change. Your ultimate goal is not just to influence outcomes, but to influence humans to act in ways that drive those outcomes.
Whaaaat?
Leadership, at its core, is about the intentional influencing of behavioral change. It is about recognizing that your role goes beyond managing tasks and delivering results. Your real job is to facilitate and guide individuals and teams toward meaningful and sustainable change.
Don’t be fooled!
One of the common pitfalls that leaders often encounter is relying on a default model of influence – that what works for one person will work for everyone.
The truth is, most leaders are not consciously aware of their model of behavior change. I’m guessing that you try to lead your people in ways that worked for you in the past – maybe in ways that you experienced with a favorite leader or manager.
But becoming a human expert in 2023 requires a different skill set than what we’re used to. It means…
- developing deep empathy
- honing active listening skills
- adapting your leadership style to suit different situations
- having a keen awareness and respect for the diversity of identity, personality, and values of the current workforce (Gen Z is rocking our world!)
Being a human expert requires you to invest time and effort in understanding the needs, desires, and aspirations of your team members. When you do that, you uncover the key drivers that motivate them and unlock their full potential.
Strategy and workplans are great. But understanding how humans behave is paramount.
You need to develop a deep understanding of why people do what they do.
By focusing on intentional influencing of behavioral change and adopting a conscious and adaptable approach, you can truly make a difference with your people and be a BEST BOSS for them and your organization.
